Alright, Say what you will: Overpriced orange juice (delicious), deceitful waiting time estimates (irritating) and the extra six bucks for your tuna scoop on that oh-so addictive Greek salad (sorry, it’s worth it)– but there’s still a reason why our Beauty’s continues to rake in the business after 50 years. Although the retro Jewish-deli-meets-the-50’s-décor is charming enough, the food happens to be good. Damn good. Scarf down the “Mish-Mash”, an artery-choking omelette peppered with salami and hot-dog (be sure to position yourself next to a bathroom), the Beauty’s Special, a Montreal staple that includes lox (glorified smoked salmon), onions, tomatoes, cream cheese and those bagels we fight with New Yorkers about, or sip from the massive Cookies ‘n Cream smoothie. Don’t forget to stop and listen to what’s going on around you as entertainment abounds in that adjoining booth to the right of you.

While the funky-friendly servers bring breakfast all day, lunch offers a wide array of fresh salads, (enough to feed half the restaurant and no, they CANNOT be ordered in halves) including the grilled veggie, crab meat, chopped egg or tuna. You can also go for the gold and plunge into the club salad: the regular ingredients topped off with cooked chicken or turkey, cheddar cheese, bacon and mayo. Savour the chopped liver sandwich, share the tuna-egg club and finish yourself off with the killer chocolate cake and you’re all good. We can spend some time on the phenomenal burgers, the toasted banana bread, the home-made soup (check out the red lentil and green pea) or the Super Beautys 2 (complete with 2 pancakes, 2 waffles an overload of saturated fats like bacon, sausage and home-fries) or, you can just pick yourself up from that hangover, mix in with the Plateau hipsters, the hockey moms and the legendary owner Hymie “the-wait-is-only-5-minutes” Skulnick and get into line. It’s worth it just to hear the regulars complain about the wait.

It was a late night of drinking last night and I’m not sure if I was at Tiffany’s or Baton Rouge. Someone come wake me out of this inebriated dream because I feel like the red stick has morphed into a Kosher style bourgeois IHOP. OK, enough banter because you’re all going start to think that I had a bad experience at Tiffanys Bistro and Grill, when in fact it was quite delicious. Finally there’s a breakfast joint in the city that serves corned beef hash which make my belly sing like the late Pavarotti. The Restaurant features a huge American style menu with a large breakfast selection, sandwiches, salads, burgers, pastas and steaks. I’m yet to try the meatier stuff but last week I had the grilled chicken sandwich, which was fresh and tasty. The breakfast menu is a nice change from the more traditional Montreal Restaurants. Now onto the creepy stuff….#1 they asked us if we want our toast before the meal, #2 they over serve in that sneaky, sneaky kinda way, #3 the waiters have very groomed facial hair (ie: chine straps, soul patches and line beards), and #4 of course that whole baton rouge vibe. The last thing that annoyed me was the fact that I asked for my potatoes, corned beef, and sausage to be well done which they weren’t. If you tell me you can do it then do it bitches!

Cosmos Snack Bar and I, have been down since day one. I still go there with hopes of collecting enough evidence for my lawsuit against them for contributing to my future sextuple bypass. G-d forbid on the bypass and sorry guys for the whole fattening innuendo but my cousins cholesterol did go back down to normal after he stopped eating two creations and a mish mash (lots of eggs, bacon, sausage, ham, salami, tomato, onion, cheese and toast.) a week. You are so forbiddingly delicious and I can’t help but crave your two eggs over with butterflied sausage burnt, patates burnt, and a bagel on the grill. There are also days that I sweat thinking about biting into a creation (BLT with a fried egg and salami $4.75), greasy bacon cheeseburger, or feeding myself for two days with a mishmash. The thing that I appreciate most about Cosmos though is the secret ash in my food, the family feuds, and of course good old Tony. For all of you who are confused by my banter Cosmos is a Breakfast restaurant counter, they have some of the the best potatoes in the city, it is tinny and you only can sit at the bar (11 stools) except for in the summer when you can sit outside, and there is a documentary that you can catch on the owner (Tony Koulakis) called “Man of Grease”.

You all know how I fancy restaurant Toi Moi et Cafe but i have to say that it’s a real tossup when comparing it to restaurant Quoi de N’Oeuf, that’s just a hope skip and a jump away. The skillet omelettes are a nice twist on traditional omelettes and come highly recommended (try Le Reine). Everything else on the menu is always fresh and delicious but I personally feel lacks that certain je ne c’est quoi. Another plus is artwork on the walls from the gallery down the street (just think you can be the proud owner of reddish green on canvas).

It’s really quite amazing how desperation can lead to amazing Never Land (not Mr.Jackson’s) like discoveries. Here be a tall tale which lead to such a find. Once upon a morning time I stood in line at L’Avenue restaurant having to pee while battling the Sunday mornin eastern Montreal hipsters. I said to myself, we be in a city, so there be other options to ease me pains of prostate, wanting to hit, and debilitating hunger.I then walked a whole of TWO blocks, and fell at the door steps of the Montreal Breakfast Restaurant, Le Pistou. Story over!… What a find! I now enjoy breakfast creations like “les Maîtresses de Valmont” a twist on Eggs Benedick covered in crisp bacon, cheese and a sumptuous Mornay Sauce. All of the omelettes are perfectly fluffy (and come with cheddar cheese), crepes are amazing, bacon is great, and the sausage is just as good. I guess the one drawback is the potato situation. All and all bisou Pistou restaurant.

Montreal restaurant L’Avenue reminds me of a fat American boy named Billy whose father took a 3 year sabbatical in France, moved to Montreal, and opened up a restaurant to support Billy’s eating habit. I know what your thinking everyone, I’m gonna tear this Montreal restaurant apart, but no no, I happen to be a huge fan of glutinous artery clogging cuisine. Breakfast is definitely the specialty at l’Avenue and never disappoints. The one item that I crave is their eggs benedict with chicken and fried potatoes (I know it sounds gross but order it and thanks me later).Now onto the lunch menu. The burgers are amazing (I love the Parisian…baguette, brie, asparagus), the club sandwiches are also unbelievable (get the one with avocado), but good luck finishing one unless your name is Billy, and they have a hot chicken sandwich that if you finish you get the second free. Fruit smoothies also quite delicious…add some booze for that extra pick me up in the morning.

Service: I feel like knocking out every waiter in that place for their lackadaisical additudes/10

Oh Des Monts, how do I love thee, let me count the ways. 1) Your combo platter is breakfast restaurant perfection. 2) Your Belgian waffles are crisp on the outside and fluffy on the inside. 3) Your bacon is hand cut and cooked to perfection. 4) Your sausage is yumiful. 5) I’m not usually a pancake lover but yours are so very wonderful. 6) You have Capou bread. 7) Your fruit are fresh and fabulous. 8 ) Your Breakfast club is to die for. 9) I want to marry you hamburger steak and fries. 10) Even if you want a healthy breakfast you never disappoint. There is a little good and a little bad to all Montreal breakfast restaurants and Oxford Café restaurant is a fine example of both. The good is the thin and delicious fruit filled pancakes (though me I’m a salty breakfast lover), the great cheese omelets with real cheddar (except for when they’re undercooked and the cheese isn’t melted), and the crack heads from the neighborhood. The bad is the fact that they charge for real maple syrup, that they refuse to butterfly their sausage, and their patats that taste good at first but then transform themselves like the hot chick from Species to become rather nauseating. Price is about ten dalla per body involved in the eating session.

Nothing makes me happier than a Montreal breakfast restaurant with those little soft boiled eggie cups that my grandmother used to serve me her soft boiled eggies in on an overcast Vermont morning. I know what your all thinking… yes slightly creepy, but sorry ladies and gentleman it just makes something ordinary that much more delicious. Oh yes, if you want some fine Montreal breakfast, please go to this little Notre-Dame gem. The fruits on all plates are so fresh and tasty, the omelettes are innovative and excellent, the patates are ok, the coffee so very perfect, and yes the overall experience is as fine as that first butt in the mornin. Price to all ten dallas per person.

Who would have thunk it that a pooch could inspire such fine cafeteria cuisine. A pooch you say? Yes a pooch I say. Cluny is in fact the owners K9 companion and sent mind bullets through telekinesis to create some of the bestest lunch in the city. All the sandwiches are just superb at Cluny especially the spicy tuna, mango chicken (sometimes a little much), that meat one, and the tomato bocconcini (they may add chicken if they like you). They also make a hot meal daily that’s always amazing (I’ve had lamb shank, sausage, stews….). As far as desserts go their bread pudding is the best ever and you know what so is everything else (including an out of this world espresso). On top of all that they also have great wine by the glass and bottle, amazing drink selection, and are located in an artist co-op called the Darling Foundry in Old Montreal with all kinds of funky exhibits like rock’s in strawberry baskets (which obviously represents the feminist struggle in this world).
