Forget what you think you might know, because you really know nothing. This restaurant embodies that which is truly special about the Montreal food scene. Forget the expensive joints like Au Pied de Cochon, or the poor attempts at authenticity or the upscale trendy restos. Frankly, many other cities out do us here. Montreal restaurants are absolutely special when it comes to the hole-in-the wall, authentic, and inexpensive home-cooked cuisines. Le Roi du Wonton offers home-cooked Taiwanese meals like your Taiwanese grandmother would have made if you had a Taiwanese grandmother. Every component of every dish is made fresh on the spot, from the dough of the dumpling to that which the dumpling is stuffed with. In most places, especially the larger ones, this is unheard of.

This place knows their dumplings and offers the best Montreal Taiwanese dumplings you will find. We started with cabbage pork dumplings, beef dumplings, shrimp dumplings, Taiwanese pancake and baby wontons with peanut butter sauce. If you have to choose one, I strongly recommend you go with the cabbage pork dumpling it is their specialty and by far the best. We then gorged on twice cooked pork served on a bed of freshly made wheat noodles, a marinated baked chicken thigh and plate of tender stewed beef and vegetables. All the dishes were tasty. The pork was well spiced, fried with a sort of black bean paste. The chicken leg was a treat, it was extremely tender, it wouldn’t have mattered if I chewed it or just swallowed the morsels whole. The beef too was very tender, with large lean chunks generously pilled over vegetables, rice and a small chive omelet.

The Taiwanese lady, herein referred to as the Taiwanese lady, ensured that our teapot was always replenished; the steady supply is probably the only thing that allowed us to eat this insanely massive meal and survive. The feast ended with complimentary, perfect little, still warm short-bread cookies.

Le Roi du Wonton is authentic. Unless you were born of a Taiwanese mother, shut up and enjoy your meal….like I said: you know nothing. Let me be straight with you, don’t bring your date here, this place is as ugly as a toothless over-aged stripper from Boucherville. But bring your girlfriend, because you can fill her up for just under 10 bucks.

P.E.T.A activists like pho fur, some women like pho nails, some men like pho hair, and some Brett Michaels like pho breasts, but Chef Deck is tired of only Pho Vietnamese Restaurants popping up on every Montreal street corner. For this reason Vietnamese restaurant Hoai Huong is one of my all time favorites in Montreal (don’t get me wrong I love Pho Bang but I need a little change). Though Hoai Huong does have delicious soups their meals are what make them truly spectacular. I adore their lemongrass chicken, perfect imperial rolls, bird nest, the pancake meal, and just about everything they have to serve. They remind me of a restaurant in New York called Saigon Grill that never disappoints. So pho sho sho I will frequent Hoai Huong until the day I’m to fat to get out of bed (unless they start to deliver)!

If you’re trying to figure out where to go for a good shabbes hipster sushi dinner look no farther then good ol Ginger restaurant. For those of you of the semitic faith you understand that if you want to catch up with all the forgotten ones from your life, all you need to do is to go to Ginger on a Friday or Saturday. Now to the food….Ginger has and will remain one of my top 3 picks in the city for the freshest and most innovative sushi in Montreal. I recommend telling the waiter your budget and letting him bring out the chef’s selections (maybe you’ll even get a jona roll if you ask nicely). The lobster salad, the apps, and even the noodle dishes are all solid choices. If you are looking for good service or a decent wine / sake list head elsewhere. It isn’t nobu, but if your a hipster in a tight cardigan and a fedora this is the perfect place for you. If you swing by be sure to say hi to my friend Lance Faded at the bar.

Interesting that Pakistani Restaurant Halal 786 is situated at the address 766 Jean Talon West isn’t it. Could the owners be dyslexic? Could the landlord have convinced the owners that they rented 786, but little did they know, he also owned 766 and put them in it? Could it be an honest mistake? Well it turns out it’s none of those things, though I felt I had you a little on the landlord story thing. So for all of you to know, 786 is supposedly the numerical value for “Bismillah al-Rahman al-Rahim,” openin phrase of Qur’an, and another way of saying Allah (786 is also the numerical aggregate of “Lord Hare Krishna”). Yes food…The food here was great. The Lahori fry fish was amazingly spiced flaky perfection. The chicken, veggie, Basmati rice, Naan, and whole wheaty naan type bread that has slipped my mind were also very good. I must say that it makes me so happy that there’s yet another Park-X Find!

We’ve had many inquiries as per the best Korean Restaurant in the city. After a long hard search I one day had a déjà vu of a meal from my plus size childhood. In this daylight trance I remembered sweet aromas of deliciousness and my aunt Rosalie ordering up a storm (like she always does that’s why she’s one of my top 4 eating partners) as she yelled across the table at 10,000 decibels in regular conversation. I then remembered a full belly, happiness, and a slight cramp from over eating. This immediately prompted me to call my beloved aunt to find out if this was only a dream, or if in fact this Korean excellence did exist (yada, yada, yada…it did). I went for a solo lunch to restaurant Hwang Kum and enjoyed an amazing array of Kimchi, yummy dumplings, and some chicken, noodle, rice something or other, which all transformed me into that fat, happy kid again (BTW way better the other Korean restaurant on Sherbrooke Maison de Seoul). It makes me so happy that I found you again Hwang Kum, because now I can enjoy good Korean Montreal cuisine again and again.

Many of you share my plight when trying to find a fine affordable Lunch meal near your office in downtown Montreal (particularly on the corner of Rene-Levesque and Peel). Although I have yet to find anything spectacular in this region I have found a few places that are worth mentioning. One of these finds is a little downstairs Thai food / Vietnamese restaurant style diddy by the name of Chez Thai resto. Here you will find daily lunch specials under $10 that are sure to satisfy your hunger. The food is decent for you vagabonds of the daily 9-5 downtown lunch but might not satisfy the discriminating pallet. S.O.S…..people of the world unite and help Chef Deck find a lunch spot within a two minute walk from my office!

Once upon a time in a land far, far away (named Ma-lay-sia) a dream was constituted. In present times this incarnation has formed an institution known as Cash and Curry, this recently opened Plateau, Montreal restaurant, serves Malaysian inspired dishes with lots of heat.

When you cash my curry please be gentle. With your partners Nantha and Ali by your side Cash and Curry, you will prevail over the forces of blah. My blackened shark was very spicy, with so many sides to revel in. Pad thai, simple yet elegant, as it should be, and the coup d’etat found resoundly in a fusion miso-tom yum, extreme flavor.

Right next to the Claremont restaurant in Westmount, is a little Montreal Korean gem. It’s a nice spot to go, if you’re sick of the regular bistro food in the area. It’s not the best of the best (by the way also a fine movie with good old Eric Roberts), but it’s definitely worth a visit. Like most Korean restaurants in Montreal, you start of with a nice selection of kimchi, and than I recommend going for the Korean BBQ. They also have a fine selection of noodle dishes, various soups, and tasty appetizers. Trust me ladies and gentleman, go if like me you’re sick and tired of the Westmount restaurant scene. Maison de Seoul is a breath of fresh air.

You’re always consistently good and in my opinion have one of the best lemon grass chicken in Montreal (except for maybe Hoai Huong on Victoria, Montreal). All your tonkinese soups are great, especially your weekend spicy soup (WSS), sooooooo fabulous, fresh, and so clean (but if u want the best WSS go to Pho Bang on Côte-des-Neiges). I guess your only drawback is that your appetizers are just standard, and your bean drink doesn’t have enough slimy green, red, and yellow things. All and all kind Sir, hats off to ya.

If you’re looking for a fine grilled fruit, head over to Senzala for breakfast, but don’t stay for lunch or dinner. La Selva (byob – Bring your own alcohol), your cheap, authentic Peruvian food should have made you number two, however, cutback streets make for no hipster appeal.

Janos is always amazing (potent hot sauce) and so are all the others. We’re blessed with bonne Portuguese restaurants in French Canadia!
