Sergio Momesso might not have been the best Montreal hockey player in the world but his legacy lives on through his faultless sub. In my humble opinion Momesso’s Restaurant has by far the greatest Montreal sub I ever tasted. I have only ever experienced their sausage sub, because once you go spicy sausage, you can never go back. The meat is so succulent, the spice is just right, the bread has the ideal crisp, and the coleslaw brings together the medley of perfection. I’m also smitten with their onion rings which add to the overall utopia of flavors. So to finish if you or anyone out there wants a real legacy (not a commercial Wayne Gretzky one) stuff that sausage and that sausage will stuff you!

Chef Boyardee aint got nothin on Le Petit Italien restaurant. Oh yes Mr. Boyardee….dems be fightin words (meet me at at the clock tower at 4:00pm eastern standard time on April 28th, 2011 and I’ll show you what’s up). restaurant Le Petit Italien has been one of my favourite Montreal Italian restaurants for many years now and the following expresses why. We started with the Antipasto Misto ($10-$14) that had marinated eggplant, farfalle pesto, salami, parmigiano reggiano, olive tapinade, prosciutto, and bruschetta that was tasty as tasty can be. For the mains we had salmone balsamico (grilled salmon with balsamic) and a duck confit pasta both of which were excellent. For the record I will never order risotto at a restaurant but Le Petit Italien is my one exception. You tickle my fancy my little Italien!

California pizza is yet another example of the peoples appreciation for a good deal. Here you’ll find flocks of people coming from a hard workout at the Y of taking steams and gossiping, looking for a nightly special. Luckily California Pizza Restaurant Montreal has consistency down to a science. The pizzas are oven baked and pretty good (I like the Palm Springs), as are some of the pasta dishes (thumb up for the tortellini rose), and the veal dishes are ok as well. You’re not gonna find a gourmet meal here but you will find clean Italian comfort food. Another plus is the fact that you are bound to hear the latest and greatest story’s about how Jonathan Goldstein is at the top his McGill MBA class, and plans to start the first internet startup in Nunavut upon graduation.

Toucheh (Touché) touches me in that special place that they tell you not to touch in preschool (by the way they told me, yelled at me, and scorned me, but it be such a warm nice place to rest your hand). This little Westmount gem is the only bring your own wine restaurant (byob) in the area that’s consistently good and cheap. All meals here are served as a table d’hôte that includes, home made soup, salad, main course, and dessert, all of which are under $20. Most meals have a Persian twist because of the origins of the husband wife owners (Iranian), but you can also dine on delicious Italian style dishes. My usual here is the baby calves liver that’s always seamlessly cooked to perfection. Toucheh Restaurant Montreal is sure to bring new life to those bored of the normal Westmount bistro blah, blah, blah.

A long time ago (nineteenth century), in a land not so far away (Old Montreal), there happened “the great battle of the perfect pull” between Joe Beef Tavern and the Liverpool House. Nowadays the battle’s been resumed (much friendlier though…no more battle axes and trebuchets) thanks to the same owners as Joe Beef (Allison Cunningham, Frédéric Morin and David McMillan) and Liverpool house is a triumph! We started with a charcuterie plate with home made head cheese, prosciutto, coppa, mortadella, Jambon de Bayonne, salami and more which was the finest example of its kind in the city. We then had clams casino, home made ravioli and the grilled cheese of all grilled cheeses that were all mind-blowingly delicious. For our main courses we ate a veal scaloppini stuffed with Parma ham and topped with Mozzarella de Bufala, Osso bucco on top of a saffron risotto, and home made shrimp pasta all of whose originality and taste shined brighter then the reading rainbow. The meal set the precedence for fabulous desserts of beignet’s covered in an espresso infused chocolate, and a trifle type diddy. So after that experience I have to say that I’m looking forward to having to 2.3 children and growing old in Montreal at the Liverpool House restaurant.

Bravo Mr. Beniamino for bringing the finest home made panini sandwiches to our great city. For years I craved you but, but I hadn’t met you, and now I love you. Everything you make is perfect (especially your chicken salad sandwich with walnuts, peaches, pistachios, and some other stuff)! Your salads are also top notch (the orzo salad, fennel salad, and all the others which are changed daily). I also have to mention that your hot lunch meals, which also change daily are truly flawless (scaloppini, different fishes, amazing meat loaf, fantastic meatballs, everything). Your big brother take-out / grocery store on McGill street is also just as fine according to my opinion. You guys know what’s up and never disappoint!

For all of you who hated on me for the questionable restaurant Pizzaria Napolitana review wake up and smell the sweet savory aromas exuded from restaurant Bottega Pizzeria in Little Italy. This is where to find great Montreal Italian pizza ladies and gentleman! Here you’re not going to find pizza with canned ingredients pumped out on a conveyor belt, but rather the finest of ingredients blended together achieving true thin crust pizza superiority. The appetizers were all quite tasty. The gnocchi was made with a simple tomato sauce and very good (but a little over cooked), the grilled peppers were perfect, marinated eggplant was top notch, and the little breads things with prosciutto and melted cheese were way too dang good. Now onto the highlight of the night being the pizzas. The pizza with mozzarella di Bufala and cherry tomatoes is what dreams are made of, the pizza with marinated veggies and cheese was by far the best veggie pizza ever, and the pizza with prosciutto di parma, olives, marinated artichoke hearts, and wild mushrooms was perfect. They also have an excellent selection of reasonable Italian wines. So to all of you who questioned my prowess, eat my bocconcini!

Pizzaria Napoletana was once one of my favorites but I must say it has gone downhill. Maybe they don’t feel that quality and service is of importance anymore considering most people like mediocre food, and the fact that there is always a minimum of a 20 minute wait to be seated. As you can see loyal reader this is a little bit of a sore spot in my heart considering I used to love it here. Now onto the food… all pizzas are thin crust and very good, the pasta is ok, sausage is good but “Roma”, and salads are salads. What I will say is that it’s still a good place to go with large groups if you make a reso, and it’s nice that it’s bring your own wine.

Last time I was at Tre Marie was about two years ago and it left me with a warm fuzzy feeling inside, however last weeks experience at Tre Marie Restaurant in Little Italy, Montreal left me highly disappointed. I needed to see if your spaghetti and meatballs was actually better than Il Piatto Della Nonna but sorry no dice. Your trio pasta was good but not great (but I did love your ravioli), veal was mediocre, tomato bocconcini salad very ordinary, hot antipasto was really good though (especially the sausage). So to Tre Marie Restaurant, you’re just not keeping up to your impeccable reputation in Montreal.

To Il Piatto Della Nonna (Grandmother’s plate) restaurant, you made me happier than R-Kelly in a back alley in Thailand. G-Dubbs introduced us, but I feel like we must have broken bread in another life. Your spaghetti and meat balls were spectacular (perfect sauce to pasta to veal meat ball ratio), your sausage was delicious as well, however due to being a smoker I feel it was slightly under spiced, your salad was salad, and you homemade minestrone was excellent. Most of all Domenico, you and your family made use feel like we were guests eating in your southern Italian garden (plus you guys were all fricken hilarious and what’s better than a good laugh with great food). Bravo!
