Here you’ll find flocks of people coming from a hard workout at the Y of taking steams and gossiping, looking for a nightly special. Luckily California Pizza Restaurant Montreal has consistency down to a science. The pizzas are oven baked and pretty good (I like the Palm Springs), as are some of the pasta dishes (thumb up for the tortellini rose), and the veal dishes are ok as well. You’re not gonna find a gourmet meal here but you will find clean Italian comfort food. Another plus is the fact that you are bound to hear the latest and greatest story’s about how Jonathan Goldstein is at the top his McGill MBA class, and plans to start the first internet startup in Nunavut upon graduation.

For all of you who hated on me for the questionable restaurant Pizzaria Napolitana review wake up and smell the sweet savory aromas exuded from restaurant Bottega Pizzeria in Little Italy. This is where to find great Montreal Italian pizza ladies and gentleman! Here you’re not going to find pizza with canned ingredients pumped out on a conveyor belt, but rather the finest of ingredients blended together achieving true thin crust pizza superiority. The appetizers were all quite tasty. The gnocchi was made with a simple tomato sauce and very good (but a little over cooked), the grilled peppers were perfect, marinated eggplant was top notch, and the little breads things with prosciutto and melted cheese were way too dang good. Now onto the highlight of the night being the pizzas. The pizza with mozzarella di Bufala and cherry tomatoes is what dreams are made of, the pizza with marinated veggies and cheese was by far the best veggie pizza ever, and the pizza with prosciutto di parma, olives, marinated artichoke hearts, and wild mushrooms was perfect. They also have an excellent selection of reasonable Italian wines. So to all of you who questioned my prowess, eat my bocconcini!

Pizza Pita is the only Montreal kosher restaurant in the city that I crave on a regular basis, baruch hashem. As well as being the only MK restaurant frequented by Chef Deck they claim to have the only Kosher drive-thru in the world (just a little piece of useless knowledge for the people, though I find it hard to believe that there isn’t one in Israel). The thing that is so special about their pizza is that perfectly orangee grease, which many places try to duplicate but rarely succeed in doing. Another highlight is the amazing falafel, that you order and fill with many delights at the falafel counter. They also have a salad that is mixed in front of you, where again you add your desired fixings. Lastly a warning to all who are not kosher…You ain’t gonna find no 99 cent pizza here.

Pizzaria Napoletana was once one of my favorites but I must say it has gone downhill. Maybe they don’t feel that quality and service is of importance anymore considering most people like mediocre food, and the fact that there is always a minimum of a 20 minute wait to be seated. As you can see loyal reader this is a little bit of a sore spot in my heart considering I used to love it here. Now onto the food… all pizzas are thin crust and very good, the pasta is ok, sausage is good but “Roma”, and salads are salads. What I will say is that it’s still a good place to go with large groups if you make a reso, and it’s nice that it’s bring your own wine.

Claremont should only remain a restaurant frequented by Westmount mommies who are too drunk at lunch to be able to distinguish fine food! For those of you who don`t have as large of a disposable income from your bourgeois husbands, buyer beware. Though not very expensive the prices should at least justify being able to use olive oil in their dishes. The Salmon and pine nut pasta though recommended by the waitress was worse than a lean cuisine. The chicken salad was ok but again use some frickin olive oil. If you end up there only go for a burger, 3 cheese pasta, pizza or the goat cheese salad (by the way, they used to have great sweet potato shoe string fries but now they’re fat and weak).

So called classy Westmount ladys (used loosely) to look at: 9/10

As per much demand we ventured to Swiss town Des Laurentides “Val David” for some say the greatest poutine on earth (though I say best sauce and cheese curds!). Cal’s is the best example of the Greco restaurant monopoly because even in a town of 5000 French Canadians, 37 Jews, and 7 Greeks the restaurant market is purely souvlaki based. If you’re up north promise me that you’ll take the time out of your busy schedule to go for one of the best chicken pita’s, Gyro’s, or dirty Pizza ever. Cal’s Pizza never disappoints!

We journeyed to the far east with great expectations of culinary excellence and boobies, next to our city’s greatest architectural masterpiece being the Olympic Stadium. Huge mistake! First of all the coffee was lukewarm water, the cheese omelet wasn’t a fifth as good as an airplane one, the eggs were runny and gross, the patate’s tasted like they’d been cooked freezer burnt and fried in oil that’s been recycled a few hundred time, bacon good, and sausage good but something funky about them. Secondly, who really wants to look at 3 month pregnant strippers, and smell scented baby wipes while eating your first hung-over meal of the day besides 20 year old American community college frat boys!

The fact that they play Metallica’s Unforgiven in a breakfast joint: 10/10
Food: Make you sick/10
A waste of my time (sorry Bus Boy Bob): 10/10

There is no place for a food snob when it comes to a Costco, or as I prefer Club price meal. I am always overwhelmed by the daunting task of having to choose between a slice of pizza and a Kosher hot dog. There are other options but they are of no interest to me when faced the previous two. The extra large pizza has a thick crust, perfect amount of sauce and just the right amount of cheese that is always cooked just right. The hot dogs do not require much more description other than they are big and juicy.

Best .99 cent pizza in the city except for maybe one place which I can’t mention because I was given the veto.

UPDATE: Things have changed for the worse here, prices are on the rise. Cheese pizza is now $2 with tax, so goodbye 99 cents.
Tip: Make sure to ask for chili and olive oil
