Did you know that the Portuguese saying “A mulher e a sardinha querem-se da mais pequenina” means “Women and sardines, you want them to be small”. Just a little food for thought. When your lookin for quick, reasonable, Portuguese restaurant grill on the Main, Janos (big brother to restaurant Le Barcelos Grillades nearby on Prince Arthur) won’t disappoint. I recommend getting the grilled mixed combo plate where you can choose a combo of four different dishes (chicken, lamb chops, octopus, sausage, rabbit, quail, and I forget what else). This particular night we opted for grilled trout and calamari which were both grilled to perfection (with great home cut fries). The only thing that is consistently poor at Janos is the starter salad (at least there’s bread and olives though). So old friend Mr. Jano I’ll always like you but I can’t say I love you.

For those of you who don’t mind spending twenty bucks on a quality sangwich and salada (and don’t want to feel violated like at Soupe Soup) Montreal restaurant Café Vasco Da Gama is sure to tantalize your taste buds. Walking into this cafe smacks you across the face with fine memories of quaint little spots from drunken days in the Algarve. They change their menu of sandwiches, salads, hot dishes, and desserts daily and everything is of the freshest and highest quality. On the days that I’m feeling a little gluttonous I’ll order the fois gras burger (Sofa King good), but on this particular day i had a grilled chicken sandwich with grilled veggies, kalamata olives and curry mayo, accompanied by a barley salad with chorizo (My partner had the salad trio which was Sofa King good too). Another thing I love about this place is that I can end every meal with a coveted Illy espresso. All I have to say is if you need a godfather for your children Mr. Café Vasco Da Gama I’m your man!

Wit betrays me this evening so instead I will depress my loyal readers by creating a dispirited mood for one of my favourite Montreal Portuguese grills. I’m sad but I’d be happier if I was indulging on Chez Doval’s charcoal grilled delights. Tears roll down my face as I sit home alone craving, grilled sardines, grilled octopus, amazing clams, fresh mussels, spicy grilled chicken, and sumptuous French fries. If it was a Friday or Saturday night I could be indulging on this comfort food while an old Portuguese man sang foreign love ballets in my ear, but it’s not. Montreal restaurant Jano’s make me happy but I don’t feel it would take me out of this funk quite like my Chez Doval restaurant.

To Le Barcelos Grillades Restaurant, though you’re only Janos younger brother doesn’t mean that you’re not just as special… in fact you’re pretty much an identical twin. Finally a Montreal restaurant has arrived on Price Arthur Street that won’t give you dysentery. Everything on your menu is just superb. I kind of like to start of on a bad note…. so Casa Tapas, you will never be part of my family not even once, twice or thrice removed. La Chilenita you are the best latin restaurant in Montreal and deserve the top spot, for your Chilean style empanadas are empalious. If you’re looking for a fine grilled fruit, head over to Senzala for breakfast, but don’t stay for lunch or dinner. La Selva (byob – Bring your own alcohol), your cheap, authentic Peruvian food should have made you number two, however, cutback streets make for no hipster appeal.

Boustan you’re the best middle east cutback restaurant in the city. Al-Taib you are number 2, Basha you are number 3, Amir on de Maisonneuve and crescent you’re number 4 and La Sirène de la Mer though good, I kinda hope you die of scurvy.

Though pricey according to Nancy (the Portuguese girl at the table next to us) the best Portuguese restaurant in Montreal is Sol Mar. Now looking at all the other picks you guys definitely made some good choices. Chez Doval is great and if you go on a Friday or Saturday you will be serenaded by an old Portuguese man. Janos is always amazing (potent hot sauce) and so are all the others. We’re blessed with bonne Portuguese restaurants in French Canadia!
