Sorry, we had a terrible meal here on Feb. 15, 2012. Three of us dined and we shared the calamari to start. It came out all limp and all tied together -- we had to cut it off the "stick". Never seen it served that way which would have been Ok (though strange) if it was any good.

All three entrees were poor-- the sea bass had no taste, the chicken with the beer can was also tasteless, and the hangar steak was chewy and almost inedible.

The $5.00 pint of house beer was excellent.

I've dropped by for the first time at Mechant beouf during the Happening Gourmant even in the old port and was sadly very dissapointed. I thought the point of the whole event was to make me want to come back for more, when I would have to pay full price for the food and I can honestly say that that is something I will never do.
I've had better food of the same range for half the price already.
With that said let me describe my experiance.
It was so very bland, so very...non memorable.
I had the burger as the main dish, which is something I regret as I could not finish it at all. Not because I was full, but because I couldn't take the taste of it anymore.
I asked for medium beef and it was almost fully cooked, it was dry and unlfavourable, yet while being so huge (at least an inch thick). All I could really taste was the overwhelming taste of cheese and nothing else. The bread was pretty, sure, but rather soggy and tasteless, and the fries are the equivalent of regular old fast food greasy fries.
I had a taste of my friend's pasta, and it was rather tasteless as well. It was watered down, and while being spicy, it was spicy without flavour.
Everything else I had was not bad really, the onion soup or the chocolate mousse, it wasn't something I'll remember either though.
The service was also a little bit slow as the restaurant was started to fill up more.

I threw my birthday party here the first weekend it opened in 2007 and had a pretty good experience. The steak i had was great altho it took a loooong time to come out. I chalked it up to opening jitters. no big deal. The music was a bit of an issue as all they had was satellite radio with only 3 stations; stairway to heaven while we were eating was serious zzzzzz. but the managment were amazing enough to let us attach our own ipod and we had the place jumping in no time.
ive been back since and loved the seafood platter. id definitely go again.

Went a while back during the Happening Gourmand promotion. For what I paid, which was close to 50% off the normal price, the table d'hote meal was really good value. I had a steak which was cooked how I'd wanted it, which was nice, though it did have quite a bit of gristle in it. I also had a french onion soup that came clearly from a package (tasted like one I get from costco). The full meal was a bargain at something like $22 for three courses, but quite frankly would be a rip off at full price ($45).

The decor was nice, except for the creepy DJ who kept making gestures and yelling at the tables around him. He had fishhooks in his ears.

Would go back to try that beer can chicken thing.

I visited angry beef with my boyfriend and another couple and we were seated next to the oyster bar.

while the food is beyond delish, and the tartare invoked tears of joy, sitting within range of raw fish is less than conducive to eating. sitting near the raw bar is equivalent to sitting inside a woman's private region after a long, hot day: fishy, slightly rotten and exceptionally pungeant.

The Butcher is ashamed for his unfamiliarity with this establishment......however, The Butcher only eats flat oysters from Prat-Ar-Coum in Bretagne...as such, he doesn't feel like he is missing that much....but appreciates Chef Deck's review nevertheless!
