Im a soup lover and was expecting something amazing from this restaurant. Very dissapointed. I had the Borsch soup wich is eastern european and came originally from my country and OMG did not eaven taste close to a borsch and on top they put cumin in to it. The whole soupe tasted like cumin. And I do agree 10$ for 1/2 a sandwich and a small bowl of soup not impressed I would of been more full eating at Tim Hortons.

- Gruff and pretentious hipster wannabe staff: check.
- Owner so full of themselves they think you shoudn't have condiments: check.
- Almost $15 w/tax for a soup and sandwich only lawyer types can afford: check.
- Lack of consistent quality, good on one day bad on another: check.

The only people to blame are the customers. This is consistent with the fact that people like overpriced crap. At marche Jean-Talon there's a stand that sells fresh fruit juices for $5.50 when fruit is cheap and abundant at the market. And a crepe stand selling $13 crepes. it's bloody dough for crying out loud.

No thank-you. Me and my friends strictly avoid places like this one and you should too. There are plenty of inexpensive places with good food that deserve your hard-earned money...a few examples are express st-zotique for a real sandwich or barros luco for a decent priced tasty lunch.

I've been going to Soup Soup on Wellington. I've never been disappointed by the soups or the sandwiches. Maybe because I like to try different things. I would have never thought that Pears and Parsnip soup would be so good. :)

The soup and sandwich combo, I get the full sandwich, goes for about $14. That's the normal lunch price for many of the restaurants in the area. The cheaper ones, well, lack a lot to be desired and I seldom ever return - think cheap price, cheap ingredients. You ever wonder how McD or Burger King sell the crap so cheap. When is the last time you ever heard 100% Real Beef in their ads. Good luck.
I love their Pudding Chomeur with a cafe a longe. :)

Excuse me...the entire gist of my critique was that we were talking about sitting OUTSIDE. Even though there was already a table OUTSIDE, where two people were eating with their dog lying beside them on the sidewalk, the SS employee refused to put another table OUTSIDE for us. There are a lot of people in the Plateau with calm, well behaved dogs. Restaurants that acknowledged their presence would be well attended.

Wow, I am so happy the dogs are not welcomed..... In Belgium, it is a ''peste'' to have dogs inside a restaurant....The dogs do not even pay their place in the restaurant...

We come from Ottawa twice a year or so and always eat at Soup Soupe. We have loved every soup we had over the last ten years and the sandwiches are wonderful. And surprise! That $7.95 combo fills us right up. We send all our travelling friends to this wonderful place.

I had a bad experience there the other day at the Jean Talon site and I doubt I will ever go back to the restaurant after being a regular for several years. I had sat at the counter and was trying to remember the name of the soupe as I was ordering from the board, but had to turn to the board to read the name. She obviously didn't hear me. Instead of politely asking me to repeat my order she snapped and said "I CANT HEAR YOU IF YOU SPEAK TO THE BOARD". I left school over 20 years ago and don't need some self-entitled waitress to yell at me in a public place. Whilst the soup and sandwich were exemplary as usual, I left them unfinished - my appetite had gone. I love the concept of Soupe Soupe, but they would do themselves a huge favour by screening their staff a little better.

Okay, I have something different to add....

I have been dishwashing at soupesoup for about 2 years as I learn french/finish mcgill, and I now get 12/hour including lunch. Soupesoup pays the staff well, many (probably most) of whom are also working artists or performers, who in turn are more enabled to give back to the community through the arts. At Duluth I work with a dancer, a 3d visual artist, a stylist (the last two who were at the Grammy's this year nominated for best music video for their work in 'hurricane'), two actresses, and a tattoo artist (and two non-artists.) I am a photographer. It's nice to have a job on the side where people treat you respectfully and the hours don't keep you up until 4:30 am. Maybe you value the arts, maybe you don't, but take my point into consideration.

Get a potage or a bean soup instead of a brothy one if you are hungry, they are way more filling. But almost everybody gets the 'petit combo' for 7.95 and is full (well I assume they are because the same people come in several times a week.)

They are only in plastic containers after the lunch rush; hardly anybody comes after 3pm. If you want the best experience come at 1pm when nothing has run out.

And yeah; that person's bill obviously had coffees and desserts on it or something. It's fair to not like the soup; although i usually love my lunch from time to time we have a soup I don't really like, but not fair to say it costed that much when that's flat out impossible even if you got the largest lunch we serve.

I am obviously biased, as I work there, but I think my boss is employing a business model that is good for the community which does involve a slightly higher cost, but in which the extra cost goes towards your own body (fast food tastes good but isn't usually healthy; our ingredients are expensive) and towards the staff. More things are important in a business where you spend your money than the price of the final product. Put otherwise, Soupesoup is pretty much the polar opposite of wal-mart and the wal-mart restaurants of the world.

Do you still think she should get off that 'high horse'?
