If any Muchentuchen joint can compare to Phantom Muchentuchen it would be the great Montreal institution Boustan (I wish to have Tasty Delight attached). Boustan is one of the greats, and has been stuffing my belly as long as I can remember. They make their chicken, shawarma, kaffta, veggie, and fallafel pitas grilled on charcoal to perfection. Chef Deck’s standing order here is an all dressed chicken pita (don’t call it shish taouk!), with omelet, spicy sauce, grilled and well done (gotta mention the fact that they are the only joint that adds coleslaw). They are a Crescent street late night hot spot, and you might even run into some stars (hockey players, Tom Selleck’s mustache, Trailer Park Boys, and once upon a time the late great Mr. Trudeau). So if your budget can’t afford l’Express and you’re not into La Banquise, try Boustan but don’t blame me if you get addicted. Boustan you warm my hart with garlic and love, so XOXO until the next drinking binge!

Forget what you think you might know, because you really know nothing. This restaurant embodies that which is truly special about the Montreal food scene. Forget the expensive joints like Au Pied de Cochon, or the poor attempts at authenticity or the upscale trendy restos. Frankly, many other cities out do us here. Montreal restaurants are absolutely special when it comes to the hole-in-the wall, authentic, and inexpensive home-cooked cuisines. Le Roi du Wonton offers home-cooked Taiwanese meals like your Taiwanese grandmother would have made if you had a Taiwanese grandmother. Every component of every dish is made fresh on the spot, from the dough of the dumpling to that which the dumpling is stuffed with. In most places, especially the larger ones, this is unheard of.

This place knows their dumplings and offers the best Montreal Taiwanese dumplings you will find. We started with cabbage pork dumplings, beef dumplings, shrimp dumplings, Taiwanese pancake and baby wontons with peanut butter sauce. If you have to choose one, I strongly recommend you go with the cabbage pork dumpling it is their specialty and by far the best. We then gorged on twice cooked pork served on a bed of freshly made wheat noodles, a marinated baked chicken thigh and plate of tender stewed beef and vegetables. All the dishes were tasty. The pork was well spiced, fried with a sort of black bean paste. The chicken leg was a treat, it was extremely tender, it wouldn’t have mattered if I chewed it or just swallowed the morsels whole. The beef too was very tender, with large lean chunks generously pilled over vegetables, rice and a small chive omelet.

The Taiwanese lady, herein referred to as the Taiwanese lady, ensured that our teapot was always replenished; the steady supply is probably the only thing that allowed us to eat this insanely massive meal and survive. The feast ended with complimentary, perfect little, still warm short-bread cookies.

Le Roi du Wonton is authentic. Unless you were born of a Taiwanese mother, shut up and enjoy your meal….like I said: you know nothing. Let me be straight with you, don’t bring your date here, this place is as ugly as a toothless over-aged stripper from Boucherville. But bring your girlfriend, because you can fill her up for just under 10 bucks.

I’m calling out every man over 220 lbs in the city to join me at Le Milsa on Thursday April 16th so that we break the bank and let them feel one day of pain for their 364 days of greatness. For those of you who don’t know Restaurant Le Milsa is an all you can eat Brazilian steakhouse (Churrascaria), and if you’re a big eater it’s one of the best deals in the city ($29.95). You get salad, rice, sweet potato, salsa and as much meat as a bulimic girl can eat. The skilled swordsman come around all night with freshly charcoal spitted- turkey wrapped in bacon, sausage, chicken, rib steak, prime rib, pork, roast pork, fillet mignon, lamb, and pineapple for dessert. The only issue I have with the food it is that it’s a little over spiced and not the highest quality meat (but you can’t have it all and the portion to value ratio makes up for the little shortcomings). So by the way y’all that first sentence is no joke….April 16th June 18th, 2009 is the day and if Homer Simpson can do it, so can we!

Today my perfect teeth (no i swear…27 and no cavity’s, no teeth pulled even the wisdoms, and never even a needle in my mouth…i love you Dr. Felger) bit into a perfect burger. I have to be honest in the fact that over the past few months, i’ve been hating on Montreal restaurant M:brgr, for the pure and simple fact, that i did not believe a burger joint could be worth such high prices. Wow do i feel like a dildo now because M:brgr was fantastic. Of course i had to order the Kobe beef burger with truffle aioli ($20). Bitting into it felt like sinking my teeth into a virgin baby seal raised on the coast of Monaco. Oh yes, it was magical. I decided not to get any toppings for I wanted to see how perfect the meat was and recommend the same practice for any M:brgr goer (perfectly seasoned and juicy like a Gushers). The fries were also solid, double fried crisp with that sweetness you only get from a AAA casse-croûte. I still think that M:brgr is too expensive however that Kobe beef burger is probably the best in town (i plan on going to Le Paris tomorrow to confirm this statement). Looking to go to M:brgr on the cheap, try the lunch box special (11 am – 5 pm), it includes the AAA angus burger, fries and a coke for ($12.75). Lastly I got to mention my disappointment in the fact that I could not order it rare but don’t worry i got to the bottom of it. They buy ground kobe meat so the risk factor in cooking it rare would be against code. I suggest that they add a $60 burger of Kobe steak that they grind on the spot to the menu, so we carnivores can eat our meat bloody and waste even more money!
